Just a good story, with realistic characters, a interesting plot and great artwork. Katchoo, Francine, David, Freddie and even the neighbors have a part to play in this story line. This small collection is but the first volume in (what I hope is) a neverending story of love, hope and, sometimes, pain. If you love comics or DON'T love comics this is a book to buy!

Have to say this is one of the best reads I've found in a long time. Characters have depth, the art is gorgeous, and man do you love seeing the plot unfold!
Strangers in Paradise is a story that has something for everyone. It is a non-superhero comic that has strong female characterization. This hardbound printing of the first miniseries is a great introduction to the lives of Katina Choovanski (aka Katchoo), Francine Peters, and David. This volume in its entirety contains a highly entertaining, comical story. It can be read as a stand alone story, or it can be used as a prelude to a more dramatic and deeply involved story whose arc is entitled "I Dream of You".
Strangers in Paradise is a comic for people who claim that they dont read comics.
I've read all of SiP, from the first novel to the latest, which I think is number 11, Heart in Hand. The entire series is amazingly complex, with so much depth to it-- and every graphic novel adds to that depth, often putting another layer on events you thought you understood the first time around. I recommend re-reading SiP once you're through, so you can catch all those things you didn't think were important when you first saw them!
Moore is amazing in that every character he creates is truly multi-dimensional; even the bad guys have background. No clear-cut lines in this one.
SiP was the first comic I've ever read-- and still the best. I truly recommend it highly.
In this first book of Strangers in Paradise you will enter in the world of Katchoo (Katina Choovanski) and Francine.
In this story we find out that David has a crush for Katchoo, however, Katchoo seems to love Francine, but Francine is deadly in love with Freddy who does not love anybody (although he is so crazy to make love with Francine, at least once, that he is willing to date her for one year waiting for this moment that never comes!!!).
Basically, Strangers in Paradise is about relationships the friends that come in our lives, the ones that we fall in love with or that we hate, the ones that are true, and the ones that deceive us.
This first book is very funny and introduces the main characters in the series. We also discover that there is something wrong in Katchoo's past, but this will only be explored in the next books of the series.
My ex-comic peddling friend recommended this to me one day. I reluctantly purchased it, but was incredibly pleased with the results. I found myself reading & re-reading this comic several times that day.
The story starts off deceptively simplistic, with Francine once again brushing off the advances of her boyfriend Freddie. Freddie, fed up with her refusal to sleep with him, storms out after a scene with Francine & her roommate Katchoo. From there the story goes into several different directions, some of which are hinted at (but not gone into) in this volume. It truly is an incredibly strong start to one of the greatest indy comics of our time.
Would I recommend this to a friend? YES! This series has something for everyone... pretty girls, heartwrenching romance, and lots of action & intrigue in the later volumes.
My friends were appalled that I hadn't read "Strangers in Paradise" in 1996. Actually offended, in some cases. I'd heard of it, but never seen a copy until I got the first two graphic novels as Christmas gifts that year.
They were right. It's appalling that this book doesn't get more circulation.
The charactes are complex (to put it mildly) and compelling. Katchoo has a secret past, and Francine has a standard, if slightly interesting, present. Freddy, Francine's annoying boyfriend, pretty much stays annoying and luckilly gets what's coming to him more than a few times. Be warned keeping track of all the supporting characters is something that not even the author, Terry Moore, claims to feel up to.
Speaking of the author, in the introduction to one of the compilations I have, Moore claims not to understand why there are so many angry women in the world, and why they don't seem to understand how much power they actually *do* wield. In! terestingly enough, Moore does seem to have a grasp of why so many women are angry, but doesn't seem to realize that he's been explaining this while writing "Strangers in Paradise". This is kinda sad, and not unlike the situations his characters find themselves in.
"Strangers in Paradise" is a soap opera that deals with relevant themes, a comic book about serious topics, and a novel that causes me to laugh out loud. I strongly enourage you to invest in "The Complete Strangers In Paradise Volume One" and to start picking up the single issues. I doubt you'll be disappointed.
The product have high quality! I loved it! Came in perfect conditions! One more brazilian very happy, ! Thanks a lot!
