This book is probably on the low end of the four star rating. It was an interesting read, but it was a work of fiction that definitely had an agenda. It's a story of a Japanese documentary film maker who is looking for work. She ends up settling for job making a weekly television show for a Japanese beef company who is trying to encourage Japanese house wives to buy more beef. In the process of making the television series she ends up discovering the evils of the beef industry. The book very vividly describes a child who has been exposed to growth hormone, an evil corporate executive of a meat company that rapes with wife with anal sex, and a trip to a bloody slaughter house. It was interesting but seemed fairly cliche and over the top. It was clearly pushing an agenda through a pathos apeal and completely avoids an objective perspective. It made a good shot at delivering a worth while message, but I can't imagine anyone taking this book too seriously. Having said that, I do think that it's important to understand what goes on behind closed doors in the meat industry. Speaking from that perspective, I'm glad that this book raises consumer awareness. Maybe the book needed to be written over the top to shock people out of apathy. It's a decent read and definitely worth considering, I just wouldn't recommend it as a staple in every bookshelf.
